LaFortune Student Center provides Notre Dame students with a meeting place for social, cultural and educational pursuits. The building was constructed in 1883 as Science Hall and was converted to a student center in the 1950's. The initial renovation, as well as subsequent expansions, were made possible by gifts from the Joseph A. LaFortune family of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The present-day student center contains 83,000 square feet of space, including:

• an information desk and box office
• national restaurant eateries, including Starbucks & Subway
• a convenience store
• 9 meeting rooms
• student-run businesses, including a flowershop and an advertising agency
• student organization offices
• student club storage space

Three offices of the Division of Student Affairs are represented in LaFortune:

• Student Activities
• Gender Relations Center
• Multicultural Student Programs & Services

The first two floors of LaFortune are open 24 hours while classes are in session, and at least one eatery is open until 4AM daily.
